Textures of Soil

Soil is essential for agriculture. It is also needed for construction works, mining, and different industries. Environmental degradation of soil affects climate and atmosphere, negatively.

The soil on the surface of the planet Earth is known as "Pedosphere". Pedosphere is a mixture of minerals, liquids, gases and organic materials. Soil is essential for plantation, forestation, agricultural crops, water resources, human habitation, and atmospheric adaptation.

Soil is an outcome of various changes happening on the surface of the Earth, as climatic changes, physical and chemical changes, weathering, and erosion, Soil science is categorized into two branches:

Edaphology

The scientific study of soil effects on various habitations on the planet Earth.

Pedology

The scientific study of types of soil and its structure.

A specimen of soil is usually composed of particles of solid minerals (45%), particles of organic materials (5%) while 50% porous materials made of water and gases. Soil is a part of Ecosystem.

Its effects remove physical impurities from atmosphere. Usually Oxygen and Methane gases are absorbed while Nitrous Oxide and Carbon Dioxide gases are released into atmosphere from different types of soils. Soils are the sources of nutrients, temperature variation, water, air, and physical stability for plants, trees and plantations on the surface of Earth.

Soil differs in types considering its color, density, texture, porosity, structure, and chemical composition.
Plants nutrients are affected by pH percentage found in the soil of an area. Usually the nutrients are: Calcium, Magnesium, Sulfur, Potassium, Nitrogen and Phosphorus.
Some other nutrients for crops and plants found in soil are: Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Iron, Boron, Chlorine, Copper, Molybdenum, Manganese, and Zinc.

Every year 5th December is celebrated as the World Soil Day. The purpose of celebrating this day is increasing awareness about the importance of soil for food production, natural environment and sustainable development in the present day world.
